We love our van but don't have time to camp in it.

We just got back from six months all over Mexico, after spending 600 hours to restore this class C motor home, which looked really clean when we bought it, and drove down from Denver without a problem. I'm still amazed by how much work it took to restore correctly. I work at the same pace as a careful professional mechanic or carpenter. I restored this one for my wife and myself. I don't like problems when I'm on the road.
* 40,000 original miles on the motor home and the motor. Previously it was owned by an aging insurance agent in Denver. Papers available.
* Hand made blinds and curtains made by an expert seamstress. The fabric cost over $500.
* Back couch rebuilt for storage now sleeps one, but it could easily be extended to sleep two. Also, the table is designed to descend and sleep two, but we have never used it. So, if you're 20 and a surfer or a climber, you could sleep six inside. Otherwise it sleeps two comfortably.
* Motorcycle rack.
* Trailer hitch (We never used it.)
* Two closets for hanging clothes.
* Nine overhead cabinets.
* Full length mirror
* AM/FM/CD/usb/CB/cassette. The music runs off the secondary batteries / shoreline electric. In other words, you could leave, and leave the music on for weeks, plugged in to shoreline or not.
* Four foot high pantry shelving finished with dark leather right behind your back when you cook. No doors to open, but nothing falls while driving.
* Separate drinking water system with submergible 12 volt pump and sink faucet. Drinking water stores under the sink. Fits one cylindrical five gallon container or two five gallon gerry cans. (Pump moves easily from container to container.)
* Shower and kitchen washing water system restored with a new $100 pump, washers, neat disconnectable line connectors and shut-offs, and lines where needed.
* Shower curtain now is of normal size, so you pay a few bucks to replace it and find a new one most anywhere, instead of how it was before.
* Strong hot water heater feeds the shower, bathroom sink, and the kitchen sink.
* Four burner gas stove and oven.
* Outside two burner stainless steel gas stove. (There's an outdoor gas connection.)
* Outdoor table stores, and comes in and out, easily.
* Refrigerator: Gas, 125 volt, and 12 volt. This is a Sibir, which was made in Switzerland. It's big. If you have one, it's valuable. The coils are well protected and have no corrosion. Makes ice quickly, on gas or electric. Gas use is minimal. It would take over two months to run down the 10 gallon tank, if using only the fridge. This is your lifeline to fresh food and meat from the mercado. Wow do we ever miss fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. Even with the disastrous global increase in food prices, our grocery bill in Mexico was well over 70 percent less than what we pay in the States.
* Heater. Touch the wall thermostat, and the Coleman heater blows hot air from two ducts. Solid unit.
* Bug netting in the passenger and driver's windows. Uses Velcro. Rolls down, and up.
* Outdoor hot/cold shower. Just a hose with a shut off. Great for the beach.
* Lots of washing water (about 30 gallons, which we extend to 40-45 gallons) and drinking water capacity (five to 10 gallons under the sink, which we extend to 15 gallons). We use a lot of water. The extra weight doesn't seem to effect the gas mileage, so I stopped worrying about it.
* New Connecticut Electric Company (now Parallax) electric system charges batteries automatically. Converts 125 volt to 12 (13.8) volt. A pleasure. Sits behind its little dark metal panel, and we never have a worry. I check the connections at the batteries once a month. The old system buzzed and gave me a headache. This has two fat cables which run to the batteries, so you don't have to grapple with a snakes' nest of wires. Nine fused DC circuits. I mouse protected the hidden area with wire mesh.
* 250 amp hours of batteries (2 batteries). There was only one, so I INSTALLED AN EXTRA BATTERY BOX. From experience we knew that with two batteries you get more than twice the capacity, because there's less strain on the system. As a result, we use what electricity we want and don't worry about it. We rarely go below 50 percent. Incredible when you consider that we were places where we didn't see another gringo for weeks, often off the grid, and often we ran the inverter for eight to 12 hours a day, but we were never really that far from someone who would let us plug in for the night. If you really needed to recharge without a plug-in, you could fairly quickly charge back to 80 percent with the motor, because the alternator (or the shoreline electric charger) will charge at full blast up to 80 percent. After that the amperage drops to protect the batteries. They say that you can deep cycle back and forth to 80 percent for about a week without charging to 100 percent. After that you might be harming the batteries.
*Strong alternator. About 50 amps, just like the shore line charger. Switch to charge or not while you drive.
*300 watts continuous power, pure sine wave, inverter, hidden. Simply turn it on and plug into one of two wall outlets I installed. Always cool. Pure sine wave means that your television and sensitive electronic equipment won't buzz and act funny. If you need more watts for your hair drier, non-pure sine wave inverters are inexpensive now, and there's room for a second inverter.
* Serious voltage regulator with battery backup to protect your sensitive equipment when plugged into shoreline power. Warns against wiring faults.
* Cabover fully restored, correctly. I had to build it up to level starting with about four sheets of 1/4 inch plywood, because, apparently they didn't calculate for the one inch rubber gasket on the roof, so it leaked and the wood was rotten. Now you can sleep solid. (I used a few hundred pounds of rocks to glue the first sheet to the aluminum. It worked.)
* Roof sealed from inside out with butyl caulk (no quick fixes here), and painted with five or more coats of expensive flexible RV white roof paint. Removing the cracked and leaking lap seal was grueling. You can find butyl caulk in most any hardware store, in the roofing section. The butyl caulk used by the manufacturer in April 1978 was still good in 2008. Try that with silicone. Professional work means fast and clean, not best.
* Lower panels restored with hard wood (it was available). The screw heads had rusted and broken in most cases, so that the floor was about an inch from the wall. Now attached to the floor with excellent stainless steel screws purchased at a marine supply. Driver side front facing panel had to be restored as well.
* Mechanics cost five to 10 times less in Mexico than in the States. I did a lot of preventative maintenance. For example, brake lines flushed and master cylinder cleaned. Wheel bearings repacked. We took the bumps very slowly in Mexico. We put it up and checked the suspension before leaving. Fuel system is clean as a whistle and has clean filters from the gas tank to the intake manifold. (Got bad gas during heavy storms on the way back. Not a big deal. Try that with fuel injection and computerized motors. Or water on the pistons of your contemporary diesel motor.)
* Many propane valves and lines replaced. Gas companies everywhere always seem willing to help. Most of this work was done by a professional at a big gas company in El Paso.
*The washing water tank and filler hose were removed and restored.
* Entire bottom coated with industrial Rustoleum paint before the trip. Some rust now elsewhere, but it's superficial and brushes off easily. Massive amounts of WD-40 (motor, locks, etc.) used during the trip for protection.
* You could drive it off road. The clearance is pretty good. In a pinch, you can even drive it through soft sand(!). We avoid off road situations, however in Tabasco, four months after the hurricane, we found ourselves driving through palm trees and stopping to pay 10 peso tolls to private homeowners, because the road was missing for about five miles. Don't worry, we didn't hit any bumps. It felt good to have the strong motor and the four tires in the back. Without it, this ad wouldn't be here. Nearly all of the people in Mexico we encountered were good people, who seem to understand that what goes around comes around. But in Tabasco these people still were helping themselves.
* Level quickly pretty much anywhere. Wooden ramps of various sizes stack easily on the back bumper. Fancy bumper jack for fine adjustments.
*Chevy A/C. Not charged. Fan belt is attached and A/C is turned on from time to time, so it probably only needs a charge. (We don't like A/C.)
* If you need RV A/C, you probably would simply enlarge the central air vent in the roof to install it. Or you probably could very easily install a removable household unit in the back side window. There's room for another breaker on the fuse box. We had over 100 degrees in the direct sun for quite a while, but we didn't feel the need for A/C.
* Cruise control (We've never used it. Reconnect the blue and white electric wire near the carburetor. It probably works.)
* SEVEN NEW MICHELIN TIRES with many, many steel belts, including on the sidewalls. Rated for 2470 pounds max dual load and 80 psi cold. 215/85 16. We had quite the shock when the tires we thought were new started exploding like watermelons on a hot day far from anywhere. In fact, they were nearly new and not cracked, but under-rated for the vehicle. The toll road assistance vehicle was there within 15 minutes. They changed the tires for free. They'll even help you for free with mechanical problems. But they didn't have our rim size, anywhere. We limped down to Lazaro Cardenas (on the Pacific) on five tires, and got a huge shock when we discovered that 16 1/2 inch rims only exist in the States. To make a long story short, we paid what we would have in the States never to worry about tires again. We wouldn't have made it through the sand in Tabasco without these tires. Like anywhere these days with tires, get it in writing before they install. That's the only problem we had on the trip. We had a big dispute concerning the rim prices.
(1) Ever run a spreadsheet on how much gas costs per X miles? The difference between 12 and 11 mpg at 2.25 a gallon or 4.10 a gallon is tiny compared with 7 versus 6 miles per gallon. Twenty four feet and more is nice, but the spreadsheet curve for the gas use has become very, very steep. Plus, with something that big, you pretty much can only follow the big trucks. We met a former truck driver coming up the Pan-American highway from Costa Rica with a really big RV towing a Beetle. They'd actually pull over and drive ahead in the Beetle to check if the road was big enough for them.
