Vintage Fashion Lithographs 2 Framed Hand Colored Victorian Pochoir

- set of 2 hand-colored fashion lithographs or pochoir circa 1850-1870
- identically framed in ornate gilt wood & matted in pale pink
- these pochoir were used as magazine spreads to keep women apprised of the latest fashion trends
- although many were created in Europe, I believe that these are American from either Godey's Lady's Book Magazine or Peterson's Magazine which were both published in Philadelphia in the 1800s
- unfortunately the mats have been placed over the info which was usually found at the bottom of the page so there is no way to know without removing them from their frames
- conversely, they are better visually without the print displayed
- Pochoir were hand colored by watercolor artists directly on each litho
- many of these artists were women working from home at a time when women did not work
- truly a statement about women not only in the fashion sense but in the creative sense as well
- these are rare because of the number of women in each litho & because children are also depicted
- as a general rule there are 1-3 figures per litho
- great variety of color, including red and green
- based on the hats, hairstyles, bustles, sleeves jackets, I believe these to be 1850-1870

Size:

including frames 10 1/4" tall, 15 1/4" , 1 1/4" deep at side
lithos are 10 1/4" by 8 1/4"

Condition: These are amazing for their age. Since they were originally within magazines they each have a very subtle trace of a fold down the center. The colors are bright and clear, and there are no tears or yellowing. The mats are bright and clean. I have never hung these, and they have not been exposed to UVs for ages. The frames have a few tiny dings but are attractive and sturdy. They each have cardboard backing and wire hangers as shown in the photo. I do not know when these were framed or matted but based on the choice of frame and mat color, I would suspect 1920s.
